Yuma County, CA (KYMA, KECY) – The Gila River is moving!
The Painted Rock Dam released water that flows through southwestern Arizona into Yuma County.
The rapid river tide rushes into the Gila River and flows into Yuma.
The last time this happened was in the early 90’s, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix.
NWS service hydrologist Mike Schaffner says this is a natural phenomenon caused by the winter thaw.
“It flows into the Gila River and flows into the Painted Rock Dam. The Painted Rock Dam is a flood control dam, so it holds back water, which has the advantage of not flooding, but releases it over time, so its The water is released downstream and flows down, and the Gila Gila first goes to Dateland and then to Yuma,” Schaffner said.
A local flood warning is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 2.
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office has released a list of roads that will be closed until further notice.
