Juniors at Poston Butte High School in the San Tan Valley were awarded Flynn Scholarships.

Riley Campbell-Biter is one of 20 Arizona students who have won merit-based scholarships to attend one of Arizona’s public colleges. Poston Butte High School is located in the Florence Unified School District.

The scholarship package includes tuition, fees, housing, food, and at least two study abroad experiences. According to the press release, the scholarship is worth more than $130,000.

“Twenty students from twenty different high schools, with incredibly high performing students found throughout Arizona, study in a variety of schools in our metropolitan centers and several smaller communities. ,” said Ann Lassen of the Flinn Foundation. This year’s Flinn Scholars will participate in honorary colleges at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona. Scholarships are awarded strictly on merit.

Now in its 38th year, the scholarship is supported by the Phoenix-based Flynn Foundation in partnership with three state universities. Flinn Scholars represent public district and charter high schools.

The Flinn Scholars Class of 2023 plans to study a wide range of subjects including neuroscience, physiology and medicine, English, political science, molecular biological sciences and biotechnology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, finance and more.

About the 2023 Flynn Scholars

• Six Flinn Scholars attend the high school that commemorates the first Flinn Scholars. BASIS Mesa, Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Youngker High School in Buckeye, BASIS Peoria, Superior Senior High School, and Poston Butte High School in San Tan Valley.

• Three high schools, Basha High School in Chandler, North Phoenix Preparatory Academy, and Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, have second Flynn Scholars.

• Bioscience High School has Flynn Scholars for the third consecutive year, and Santa Cruz Valley Union High School, Red Mountain High School, and North Phoenix Preparatory Academy have Flynn Scholars for the second consecutive year.

• Seven Flinn Scholars live outside of Maricopa County and attend high school. Eloy, San Tan Valley, Superior, Tucson and Yuma.

• The scholarship received over 1,000 applications, with a winning rate of 1.9%.

To qualify, Flinn Scholars must excel in the classroom and typically rank in the top 5% of their graduating class. They should also demonstrate leadership in a variety of extra-curricular activities, both in school and in the community.

Beyond full tuition fees, other benefits of scholarships include:

• Funding for an international summer seminar after the scholar’s freshman year and at least one additional study abroad experience.

• Participation in a community of over 700 current and alumni Flinn Scholars, including about 80 scholars who are constantly studying at three colleges.
• Membership in a university honors college with amenities such as small classes, access to researchers, and guest lectures.

• Personal guidance from faculty and fellow scholars, and interaction with the state of Arizona and world leaders in business, government, science, and the arts.
• Intellectual, cultural, and social activities developed by the Flynn Foundation and the University for Flynn Scholars.
