Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Over 60 Yuma residents attended a solar observation event hosted by the Yuma Astronomy Club.
This is an event for people who want to see the sun safely with a solar telescope.

The event was held at the Heritage Library from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm and was sponsored by the Friends of the Foothills Library. This was his eighth year since the club hosted the event.
Participants also learned about the sun, solar flares and sunspots.

When asked if an event like this could inspire someone to pursue a career in astronomy or the future of the club, Ken Conway, astronomy program coordinator at the Foothills Library, said: . Keeping it up…we look forward to expanding the program again. We have some great instruments we need to share.”

In addition to the telescope, the club displayed an antenna scrambler. This was used to contact amateur radio operators from Colorado to California within line-of-sight of the International Space Station’s satellites as the station passed overhead.
Conway said this was one of many events impacted by COVID, which limited the program to one.
