YPD to be on impaired driving detail for Cinco de Mayo

Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Police Department will conduct a Disabled Driving Detail on the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend.

The crackdown will take place from Thursday, May 4th through Sunday, May 7th, driving through the streets of Yuma to stop and arrest affected drivers.

The YPD also said it would “proactively enforce traffic laws” to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence and save lives on the road.

Additionally, in order to stay safe during the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend, YPD recommends following these steps:

  • *Before* going to the Cinco de Mayo party, plan a safe way back.
  • Before you go drinking, find a sober person to be your designated driver and leave your car keys at home.
  • If you’re disabled, ask a cab, Uber, or a sober friend or family member to pick you up.
  • If you see someone driving drunk, call 119 immediately.
  • If you know someone who is drunk and trying to drive, take that person’s keys and help make other arrangements to get them to their destination safely.
