ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, May 4, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Zurich, Switzerland, May 4, 2023 – Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader driving a sustainable energy future for all, has been selected by Pattern Energy as the supplier of high voltage direct current (HVDC) and other advanced technologies for the SunZia transmission project. Chosen. This will connect his 3,500 megawatt (MW) SunZia Wind project in New Mexico to the grids in Arizona and Southern California, making it the world’s largest grid for renewable energy.

Hitachi Energy’s HVDC Light® technology efficiently transfers and integrates vast amounts of wind power over 550 miles (885 kilometers) into the local power grid. This will significantly increase the sustainable energy available to homes and businesses across the region.

When completed, SunZia Wind will have a total power capacity of 3,500 MW, enough clean, renewable electricity to power nearly 3 million Americans. The HVDC Light® system is the largest Voltage Source Converter (VSC) installation in the United States, one of the largest systems in the world, and one of the longest HVDC connections in the United States.

Niklas Persson, Managing Director, Grid Integration, Hitachi Energy, said: work. “By combining his market-leading HVDC technology and execution expertise, we are helping the United States meet his carbon neutral goals by efficiently and reliably maximizing renewable energy resources. We will be the perfect partner to help you do that.”

Pattern Energy CEO Hunter Armistead said: “The use of HVDC technology will improve the reliability and resilience of the power grid, provide clean energy in the United States, and play an important role in deploying a sustainable energy system.”

The SunZia Transmission project is a 3,000 MW HVDC link between Corona, New Mexico and Pinal County, Arizona. Hitachi Energy has already begun design and engineering work on two of his HVDC Light® converter stations, one at each end of the link. Transmitting stations convert power from AC to DC for transmission over overhead lines and back to AC for integration into the receiving grid.

Hitachi Energy has partnered with Quanta Services, Inc. (Quanta) to provide a turnkey project solution for the SunZia Project, including managing HVDC construction and building installation at the associated project site. Quanta is an industry leader in providing specialized infrastructure solutions for the utilities, renewable energy, telecommunications, pipeline and energy industries. The collaboration with Quanta aims to leverage the core competencies of both companies to deliver best-in-class solutions for your projects. The HVDC conversion station is expected to be operational by the end of 2025 to support final testing and commissioning of his SunZia wind farm in 2026.

Expert consultants from Hitachi Energy performed system studies and comprehensive interconnection and system impact analyses, to find the best solution considering the impact of the new facility on the existing grid.

Hitachi Energy will also provide “alternating current (AC) chopper” technology to help restore power in the event that power flow on the Arizona DC line or AC grid is temporarily interrupted by weather or other unforeseen circumstances. To do.

Hitachi Energy has delivered over half of North America’s HVDC projects. These include the Pacific Intertie Transmission System, which will transmit power from the Pacific Northwest to Los Angeles, the Quebec New England Link, the world’s first large-scale multi-terminal HVDC transmission system, and the connecting Maritime Link. Helps integrate renewable energy sources and improves grid stability. The company also recently announced new his HVDC projects such as: Champlain Hudson Power Express, chateau gay Modernization of converter stations by Hydro Quebec, and Intermountain Power Project.2
