Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Agencies nominate officers or agents to drive stock cars 10 laps to determine who gets bragging rights in honor of Law Enforcement Appreciation Week Did.
Law enforcement is usually out on the streets chasing criminals, but this Saturday night at Kokopa Speedway, Law Enforcement Appreciation Night will see them on the racetrack for victory.
This is the second year the Speedway has hosted the event, and we expect over 20 law enforcement agencies from both Imperial and Yuma counties to attend the race.
Each agency appointed a person to drive, and each was given a car by the person who normally raced the track.
Last year, track promoter Brad Whitfield came up with the idea for the event.
Once he figured out what he wanted to do, he reached out to a good friend, Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot.
It’s now a whole new way of thanking law enforcement, and I hope it continues every year.
“They’re going to enjoy it. Whenever you can’t be under the gun, it’s a good time, because there’s no better word,” Whitfield said.
Last year the Department of Public Safety took home the trophy, but if you want to find out who will win this year, head to Kokopa Speedway on Saturday, May 6th.
