PHOENIX—A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department diving team recovered a body submerged in Lake Mesa on Saturday, officials said.
Officials said Mesa Fire and Medical Department personnel were dispatched to Dobson Ranch Park for a water rescue just before 2 p.m. after testimony of a man entering the lake to retrieve a basketball but not coming out. .
The crew conducted an hour-long search for him on land and in the water.
The body was found around 5:45 p.m. in eight feet of water and more than 80 feet from where the man entered the water, the MCSO said in a press release.
An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, but officials say it will be unknown until the Maricopa County coroner’s office releases its final report.
The man was identified as 54-year-old Bradley Perry on Sunday.
Police said he was sitting watching people play basketball when he saw the ball fall into the water.
A witness said he struggled to get back to the lake’s edge and sank, police said.
Bradley was unprotected.
