SAFORD — On Monday, the Graham County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an agreement between the Graham County Sheriff’s Office and Flock Safety regarding license plate reading technology.
“Some people may be beeping because someone has driven over the center line once or twice, but in that case, come up with something more serious, like a murder suspect or a heavy dose of drugs. We could do it,” said Sheriff PJ Allred.
According to Flock Safety’s website, the camera captures license plate images, including partial, temporary, and covered plates, as well as other vehicle data such as make, model, and color.
When searching for a specific vehicle, such as during an amber or silver alarm, law enforcement can search the image database to see if the vehicle entered the local jurisdiction.
The system can also be networked with other law enforcement agencies and nearby privately owned cameras to track vehicle movements.
Funding for the camera comes from a $3.1 million grant received by the GCSO from the Arizona Department of Military Emergency.
