The U.S. Marshals Service on Friday identified a man detained in connection with the Mesa murders.
Joseph Pratt, 46, wanted for weapons law violations and the recent Mesa murders, was identified by the Arizona Special Commission on Wanted Violent Criminals in Grove, Arizona, officials said.
As the officers approached to contact them, Pratt then barricaded himself in the house and added several more, “ignoring the safety of the community,” according to U.S. Marshal Matthew Tate. A shot was fired.
Members of the Task Force, along with the Mesa Police Department SWAT, Apache Junction SWAT, Department of Public Safety SWAT, Grove Police Department, and Gila County Sheriff’s Department, attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
Pratt was eventually arrested after using less-lethal ammunition for disobeying police orders to evacuate the premises. Pratt was then taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said.
No other injuries were reported during the shooting, and the investigation is still ongoing.
