environment
over the highway
Re: May 26 article “The judge allowed the environmental activists’ challenge of Interstate 11 to proceed. ”
This is a good decision, at least for new highways, which increases the chances of environmental considerations. But an important environmental issue is that I-11 should not be built at all. The idea that the solution to congestion is new highways is very 20th century. In the 21st century, the money allocated for this highway should be spent on public transportation, especially the commuter rail system, preferably electric, at least from Tucson to Phoenix and possibly beyond. New Mexico railroad runners may be considered as a model for building better, greener routes in Arizona.

Why PCC is not done
change hotel to
Student dormitory?
Re: May 28 article “PCC may demolish hotels in need of repair. ”
I was shocked to read that plans for Pima County Community College’s Dratchman Hotel properties (Frontier Motel, Copper Cactus, and Tucson Inn) did not include the possibility of housing. Housing is in short supply in Tucson, so converting these historic hotels into affordable student housing for his PCC and UA students, as well as the general public, will help preserve the historic value of the property while It could be a source of revenue that offsets the anticipated cost of renovation. By working with community-oriented partners such as HSL Properties/Management who provide advice/investment/renovation/operational funding, his win-win-win situation for communities, businesses, government and universities. may be born. Why should the housing candidate be demolished when three real estate properties could thrive again, like the Sahara Apartments on Stone Avenue?
star is balanced
Regarding the letter of May 29, “Harris to be president?”
The Star published a letter on May 29, in which the author lamented the tendency to publish “liberal opinions without a balanced opinion from a conservative point of view.” The writer then boasts that she is “smart enough” to back her attack on Kamala Harris, but she dismisses Harris as “a woman who salads unqualified words.” As a lawyer who has served as district attorney, attorney general, and US senator, she certainly has more experience than a reality TV con man who has declared bankruptcy multiple times. Word salad, also known as the technical term aphasia, refers to incoherent speech and is sometimes associated with people with schizophrenia, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. The author feels compelled to add “women” to the list of failures he perceives as the Vice President’s fault, thereby making it three ticks in a dirty sentence of ignorance, aggression, and misogyny. I have managed to check it. She pays tribute to the star who printed his snarky letter. Again, this paper proves to be the one that presents every point of view, even the condemned one.
memory of
people killed in war
Each year on Memorial Day weekend, the dead in foreign wars are remembered. Tap to play the national anthem. Whenever possible, attendees remove their hats and stand to hand over their hearts. This has always been an emotional affair.
This year we attended an event at Udall Park with the Arizona Winds on Saturday and at Reed Park with the Tucson Pops on Sunday. At both musical events, military medleys were played and military personnel, past or present, were asked to stand as the melodies of service were played. As I looked around to applaud those standing, I noticed there were fewer veterans standing. We have noticed that the large-scale wars are receding and fewer and fewer veterans survived those conflicts.
As we age, the number of surviving war veterans is dwindling rapidly.
Barring another major conflict, the number of recognized veterans will continue to decline.
there is still hope
Our society today is riddled with mass shootings, racism, anti-Semitism, and a lot of hate spewed out against others. All of this contributes to a feeling of little hope for us in our wonderful, great democracy, the United States. Now something happened that gave me and my wife hope. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary at the PF Chang restaurant in Tucson on the evening of May 29th and after we finished eating, we asked for the check. The waitress informed us that our bill was paid in full by the couple at the table next door who had just left. We were amazed! You have given us hope that this country has wonderful and loving people who are full of love. It gives us hope that there are many more like them in our great democracy, our America.
second thought
About CFSD
I am a CFSD resident and actively participated in the campaign to elect the three current CFSD Trustees. This may have been a mistake. Our school district has spent months debating fully appropriate policies for transgender students in schools, and in the process, the emphasis on education has been lost.
Through my experience with children participating in the CFHS math department this year, I have learned that CFSD administrators prioritize public relations over math instruction. Even more alarming, I found that over 50% of the students in my child’s math class scored below the “proficient” level defined by the school district.
As an aside, I’ve heard that many CFSD parents are planning to enroll their children in online summer math classes because they feel there is a lack of math instruction in CFHS. . Their parents contribute to the problem.
Instead of demanding quality math instruction in public schools, we pay for tutoring and reward ourselves for being “awakened” to social issues. That is hypocrisy on the highest level.
anniversary
celebration
How did you celebrate Memorial Day? Perhaps a family gathering? Or will you join the parade? Or do you remember loved ones who died fighting for their country? they are all great.
But many of our compatriots seem to have “celebrated” by shooting, wounding and killing their compatriots. From the beaches of Florida to the streets of Chicago to our backyards in Phoenix and Mesa, America’s murders have continued.
Will this violence never end? I’m afraid not. I’m not going to do anything about it, just send my thoughts and prayers.
looks like human negligence
means dead horse
Combined with recent reports of 12 horse deaths at Churchill Downs (cause so far unknown)… here we are. The heroic “horse that carries the coffin with the flags of the soldiers to the final grounds of Arlington National Cemetery” is dying. In this case, it’s the army that’s to blame. I know it’s just past Memorial Day weekend, but I want to emphasize that I’m not here to shift the blame onto veterans or untrained lowest echelons of service or military personnel. I’ll keep it. However, the obvious allusions in this news article are inexcusable. Horses don’t die (or deserve to die) because they are ‘old’. .. It seems to me that it is inexcusably implied here as a kind of justification. They died through human neglect. Even a 6-year-old can tell you that a starving horse is probably really starving.
front or back
Can not decide? Let’s toss a coin. But what if you only have one side of the coin? You might think this is silly. A coin must have two sides. A single-sided coin is physically impossible! But we easily apply that idea to politics, religion, sex, or anything else besides coins. We never solve any problem as long as we believe there is only one possible solution. Until we recognize the existence of the ‘other side’, can we reach a middle ground where both sides can exist… I almost said ‘each other’, but the coin is like a coin with two sides, we are the same human beings, just with two different perspectives.
Investing in Tucson
Re: May 28 article “Time is running out for Tucson renters. ”
God forbid investors invest in Tucson. Rather, Tucson should continue to be the bland, unfriendly city in Phoenix’s shadow. Alternatively, readers can stop using their own biases and personal experiences to support agendas that don’t contribute to Tucson’s growth or benefit. In fact, Tucson’s residential investment properties are attractive and are at all-time highs. Nearly 95% of the time, these investors are buying distressed properties that have been slammed to the ground by careless owners or tenants. Why should I apologize for upgrading Tucson, renovating it, making it look more attractive, and demanding the rent it deserves?
