Hazardous waste facility raises concerns for local residents and officials

Special Permit Application Submitted to Yuma County Board of Supervisors Despite Objections from City Elected Officials

Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Many people are not very happy with the prospect of building a hazardous waste facility next to the Yuma Palms Mall.

Next Monday, Sidcole will face the second hurdle he must overcome to get a special permit.

Yuma City Councilman Chris Morris said, “We can’t do that for us because it’s too risky for storage.” We are talking about huge amounts of various hazardous wastes traveling on our roads. ”

The company is looking to strike a deal to treat hazardous waste near an area surrounded by farmland, homes and the Yuma Palms Mall.

In late April, dozens of concerned residents, including first responders and city council members, spoke out against the plan.

“This is not a good place. I think anyone who watches this closely feels the same,” said Morris.

Despite the concerns, the Yuma County Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-2 to recommend approval of the special permit application.

Priscilla de los Reyes lives in the area and is concerned about the environment and the children in her neighborhood.

“I think it should be transported to another place, far away from people and out of reach, in case of chemical waste or accidents or spills caused by children. , this is a children’s community,” de los Reyes said.

The request is on Monday’s agenda, and the Yuma County Board of Supervisors will vote to approve or deny the special permit.
