Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) – From CPR training to learning how to rappel off a building, Girl Scouts in Southern Arizona are learning all things public safety this week. The annual Camp Fury kicked off on Tuesday, May 30, attracting scouts from Tucson and across the country.
“Our goal here at Camp Fury is to increase the number of women in public safety service, especially in law enforcement and firefighting,” said Anika Peyton Rodriguez, one of the camp’s Tucson firefighters. .
About 25 girls stay at the camp and each day is packed with different activities.
“When I was in this camp, I felt like the best version of myself,” said Rowyn White, one of the camp participants. “Activities such as firefighting were a lot of fun, but I wanted to come back because I felt so good during and after the camp that I wanted to come back.”

Girl Scouts Camp Fury Day 2 brings campers a real-world skill most of us never experience first-hand: crime scene investigation.
Every day at camp, we focus on a new area: public safety.
Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy Virginia Howard said, “It’s a really great opportunity to have young women come in and talk to us one-on-one and make sure we have female police officers and female firefighters. ‘,” Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy Virginia Howard told KGUN 9. .
The program’s instructors, including retired Tuback Fire Chief Cheryl Horvath, are all women public safety workers.

On the third day of Camp Fury, the Girl Scouts learned how to rappel down a building and climb a fire engine ladder.
“I love getting out here and watching the girls. The best part is everyone is a little nervous before the big descent,” Peyton Rodriguez told me. “But at the end we were all stoked and we couldn’t believe what we did and now we have this much courage.”
An annual women’s leadership training event will use these skills to help young women eventually join the ranks of firefighters and law enforcement officers and play a vital role in bringing public safety to their communities. We aim to level the playing field.
