A Milwaukee man has expressed remorse after allegedly killing a 1-year-old girl.
Davon Chapman was charged Friday with first-degree reckless murder and felony possession of a firearm for the alleged shooting of young Zier Nevelles on the night of June 3. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The newspaper said Chapman chased his parents’ car in an SUV and opened fire on the car the child was in.
The shooting occurred near the 1900 block on West Atkinson Avenue, near the Atkinson Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library.
The suspect is believed to have known the victim’s family. Chapman is the husband of a close friend of Ms. Zayer’s mother.
The criminal complaint claims that Chapman and Zayer’s mother had a conversation before the shooting, but did not elaborate on the content of the conversation. (Related: 1-year-old shot twice in shoulder and cheek by 6-year-old brother)
Zayer’s father, who was behind the wheel of the Nevelles family’s car, reportedly tried to flee from Chapman, who continued to follow the car through red lights.
After crossing West Capital Drive, Zayer’s father reportedly saw a flash and heard gunshots.
“As soon as I went to the other side and opened the door, I started screaming and crying,” said Zayer’s mother, Zane Brown. TMJ4 News.
He drove his daughter to the nearby Milwaukee Fire Station, after which Ms. Zayer was taken to Children’s Hospital, where she died.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday and made his first court appearance at the Milwaukee County Courthouse on Friday morning.
