Carrie Fisher’s final film, Wonderwell, hits theaters on June 23, seven years after the death of the legendary Star Wars actress.
Fisher died six weeks after finishing filming the fantasy film, but unforeseen difficulties delayed the film’s release date. Director Vlad Marsavin spoke about the postponement in a recent interview. variety.
“Our journey as filmmakers on this film has been as perilous as the journey of the film itself,” he said. “Visual effects for a movie of this scale take time, but we were faced with the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown and of course the passing of the wonderful Carrie Fisher. It’s the perfect time to share those magical moments on screen.”

The film stars Fifty Shades of Grey’s Rita Ora, Servant’s Nell Tiger Free, Heartstopper actor Sebastian Croft, newcomer Keira Milward, and Francis Ford. Produced by Coppola and Fred Ruth. According to Variety, it includes a dedication to Fisher.
Marthavin explained that the unexpected cost hike was due to visual effects challenges. He went on to reminisce about her fond memories of her with Fisher and the profound impact she had on not only her films themselves but those around her.

“After a night of filming that lasted until 2am, she invited the whole team to celebrate together, but the party was deemed a little too noisy and was eventually called off by the police.”
“Her death was very emotional for the whole team,” Marthavin told Variety.
Fisher died four days later in an emergency on a flight from London to Los Angeles.
