Las Vegas (class) — Search-and-rescue teams found the body of a man who had fallen off the rim while rappelling down the Grand Canyon wall earlier this week.
The man “walked over the edge of the skywalk and into the canyon,” the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office said. All of these were held in the Hualapai Native American-owned and operated Grand Canyon West, which is closer to Las Vegas than the Grand Canyon National Park.
The sheriff’s office said, “Two short-range technicians (rope experts) responded as follows.” [a] A Kingman DPS Ranger helicopter heads to the scene. ”
Investigators have not released the cause of the man’s death. The man’s identity and home have not been released by authorities at this time.
In this area of Grand Canyon West, a horseshoe-shaped skywalk extends from the visitor center, and walkways provide clear views down to the canyon. There is also a viewing area right next to the visitor center where you can walk to the edge of the canyon. It is not clear whether the man fell off the skywalk or the rim.
Over the years, Grand Canyon West has had ropes and other safety features installed near some of the rims, but much of the rim here is protected from any damage until it drops more than 1,000 feet. It remains open with no fences or barricades of any kind.
