West Virginia men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins resigned from his coaching job on Saturday after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol Friday.
The head basketball coach at West Virginia University said: statement He plans to resign from the position “immediately.” “I have disappointed you and myself. I take sole responsibility for my actions and I sincerely apologize to the university officials,” Huggins said.

The famous coach was arrested around 8:30 p.m. Friday night in Pittsburgh after police encountered a black SUV blocking traffic. The SUV was damaged with “a punctured and shredded tire” and the driver’s side door was ajar, police said.
Officers told Huggins to pull over to the side of the road, which he claimed was difficult for the coach, police said. According to ESPN, police suspected the driver was intoxicated and took a sobriety test, but Huggins failed the test. A breath test showed Huggins had a blood alcohol level of 0.21 percent, double the legal limit in Pennsylvania, the paper said.
Just six weeks ago, Ms. Huggins came under fire for “anti-gay slurs” during an interview on a Cincinnati radio station. The controversy resulted in a $1 million pay cut and a three-game suspension, according to ESPN. Huggins is a graduate of West Virginia University and has played for a team he coached since 2007. Last fall, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the paper reported.

During his tenure as head coach, Huggins led the Mountaineers to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Final Four in 2010, according to ESPN.

It’s not the first time DUI for Coach Haggin.
The longtime coach was convicted of DUI in 2004 while coaching in Cincinnati and led the team to 14 consecutive NCAA appearances from 1992 to 2005, according to ESPN. Between coaching at Cincinnati and his alma mater, Huggins spent one season leading Kansas State’s men’s basketball team.
It is unclear who will succeed Huggins.
