Netanyahu says he’s opposed to any interim US-Iran deal on nuclear program

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he opposes an interim agreement reportedly being negotiated between the United States and Iran over its nuclear program.

Prime Minister Netanyahu made the remarks after Israeli media reports said a deal was being reached between the United States and Tehran that would seek to curb some of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for some sanctions relief. The report could not be independently confirmed, and the United States has publicly denied any such agreement.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel had informed the United States that “the most limited agreement, called the ‘mini agreement’, in our view, does not achieve its objectives and we also oppose it.”

Israeli site Wala reported last week that under the new understanding, Iran would limit its uranium enrichment to 60% in exchange for sanctions relief. The site also said the two sides were discussing the mutual release of prisoners of war.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said last week that there was “no agreement,” adding that the reports were false.

Wala said in his report that Prime Minister Netanyahu revealed details of the deal at a recent parliamentary committee. The United States and Israel share information, and the main focus of their exchanges is Iran and its nuclear programme.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has vehemently opposed a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers brokered by the Obama administration aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme. He was a key supporter of President Donald Trump’s 2018 decision to withdraw from the deal, which fell into disarray.

Iran claims the program is for civilian purposes. Israel sees Iran’s nuclear arsenal as a major threat and has voiced calls for its destruction and support for anti-Israeli militias throughout the region.

Israel has said it does not rule out military action to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons.
