The body of an Arizona hiker was found Friday after he “slid and fell to his death” while hiking near Sedona, officials said.

A 38-year-old man fell while hiking a “very technical” section of one of the main trails to the top of Bell Rock Butte. According to a news release from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office received a call Thursday afternoon for a welfare check for a man who didn’t show up at work. According to a statement, police found the man’s car in a parking lot in Bell Rock and called his mobile phone, revealing the man to be in the area. The man’s roommate described him as an “avid hiker” who frequently hiked the Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock trails.

The man was still not home by Thursday evening, the statement said, adding that police had launched a search and called for a helicopter. But “darkness made the search difficult,” the sheriff’s office said.

The search resumed at dawn on Friday, according to a release. Search dogs, technical rescue workers, a mountain bike team and a drone team participated in this extensive search mission.

Ultimately, Verde Search and Rescue was able to climb to the top of the mountain and “visually inspect each deep crevasse.” There they found the body of a man.

The sheriff’s office wrote that he “appeared to be on one of the main roads leading to the top of the mountain.” “The section he was in was very technical and the victim apparently slipped and fell to his death.”

The hiker’s body was recovered by Rope Tech Corps. His name has not been released.

One of Sedona’s most famous landmarks, Bell Rock Butte reaches an elevation of about 4,869 feet. According to the U.S. Geological Survey. Some areas around Butte are “rocky and rough”. US Forest Service Said.
