You might be surprised to learn that La Paz County tops the list of car fatalities in Arizona. This county, just south of us and containing the communities of Parker and Quartzite, ranked first in a recent report examining traffic fatalities on Arizona’s roads. Of course it’s a little misleading.
Ratings are based on deaths per 100,000 and, as one of the smallest counties in Arizona (latest census figures project a county population of just over 16,000), Even one death can make a big difference. But La Paz County has definitely had multiple road deaths. 2020 saw his six deaths on Interstate 10, according to reports. This is a high-use federal highway that crosses the county, where a pedestrian killed one of him and four of him died from a drunk driver. That puts La Paz’s overall mortality rate at 100.9 per 100,000, making him the top in Arizona and 26th in the nation.
Here in Mojave County, the numbers are a little better. Among Arizona’s 15 counties, he ranks eighth with a death rate of 26 per 10,000 population. His 55 deaths we suffered in 2020 included 4 pedestrian deaths and his 8 drunk driving deaths, with the road that caused the most deaths being It was State Route 95. That’s perhaps a little surprising, given that Interstate 40 has much higher speed vehicle traffic.
This report was produced by the Stacker website using data from the Death Analysis Reporting System compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
