Local students gain health care skills

Nuestros Ninos is a summer camp to learn how to work in healthcare

San Luis, Arizona (KECY, KYMA) Students received real-world training and learned about college course options at the San Luis Medical Mall.

The Border Health Regional Center works to ensure that our community has the workforce to keep us healthy for years to come.

For 25 years, the “Nuestros Ninos” summer camp has taught children about working in the medical field.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are proud to be led by Gustavo Alvarez.

“We have children and they’re going around Yuma County, specifically San Luis and Somerton, doing a regional census on immunizations and immunizations that covers Yuma County,” Alvarez said.

From general first aid to performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, learn in the field or in the classroom.

“I could save someone’s life if I gave them CPR. I’m probably the only one in my family who knows that,” says up-and-coming sophomore Nathan Aguilar. Told.

For others like new senior Alvaro Carlos, the class was an opportunity to learn about the college programs offered locally across science and medicine.

To help him figure out what he wants to do for his career.

“After talking to universities here, like STEM fields, medical fields like nurses might be interesting. Or maybe engineering fields because they say they’re going to talk to NASA. I love , so I might also love biology,” Carlos said.

Whatever the children end up choosing, it all starts with “Nuestros Ninos.”

As did Alvarez himself.

“I was part of Nuestro Niños in 2003 and am here after 18 years working at the Border Health Regional Center,” Alvarez said.

Students graduate from class on Thursday.

They are CPR certified and eligible to be employed as direct care workers.
