A mundane day by the pond turned into the catch of a lifetime for an 11-year-old Oklahoma boy.
Charlie Clinton managed to reel in a pacu, a cousin of the piranha native to South America, in a pond outside Oklahoma City. according to NPR.
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation said the pacu is an invasive species that can adversely affect ecosystems if introduced into certain areas. I have written on Twitter.
Charlie’s mother, Gianna Clinton, told NPR she thought her son was “just being theatrical” when he first warned him about the catch.
“Obviously, we’re in the neighborhood pond, so we’re used to catching a few bass and catfish,” the mother continued.
Gianna said her son was alone “fishing underneath and did a great job” and later said the fish “made a lot of resistance,” NPR reported.
Dear dear, who released the whole pacu into the neighborhood pond?
How can you do that? pic.twitter.com/WwQqJ9REAz

A mother and son duo released a fish with “human-like teeth” before they realized it was an intruder, the paper said.
“He stayed in the pond until late that night, trying to catch it again,” Gianna told NPR. (Related article: Missouri fisherman catches sturgeon in lakes)
“If he catches it again, we’re going to have it mounted for him. I think it’s an outrageous prize and he deserves it,” Gianna continued, adding, “We were going to make it look like the fish is smiling so that you can see the teeth.”
