SAFORD – “Several” inmates were described as having minor injuries following an inmate incident Thursday night at the Federal Correctional Institution – Safford (FCI-Safford) at 1529 W. Highway 366 (Swift Trail) was hospitalized in
According to Randilee Giamusso of the Federal Prisons Service Public Relations Office, several inmates were observed fighting in the prison around 6:00 pm.
Jamusso did not elaborate on the reasons behind the incident, but said prison staff quickly secured the area, no staff were injured, and “the public was never endangered.” Jamusso also said that the inmates who were transferred to the hospital were treated for minor injuries and returned to prison.
However, residents near the prison reported hearing flashes, and the Graham County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 7:10 p.m. regarding a “riot” at the prison.
According to Graham County Dispatch, an agent was sent to wait in the parking lot to keep off onlookers who were there after a riot broke out at the facility. Graham County Sheriff PJ Allred confirmed that a deputy had been sent to enforce security around the perimeter, but said no action was required and it was cleared.
The prison is currently not allowing visitors while it deals with the case.
“An internal investigation is ongoing and the institution plans to return to normal operations as soon as possible,” Giamusso wrote in an email to the Gila Herald.
