Republican Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogleth on Thursday introduced a censure resolution accusing Democratic Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal of calling Israel a “racist state.”
Mr Jayapal, chairman of the parliamentary progressive delegation, said: promised Attendees at the left-wing Netroots Nation conference said she and others had “fought to make it clear that Israel is a racist state.” She faced bipartisan criticism for the comment, which came less than a week after Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the joint parliament. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a joint resolution, which Jayapal also supported, describing Israel as a key ally and condemning the statement.
The censure resolution also refers to Jayapal’s past statements denouncing Israel. In 2021, she claimed that Hamas fired rockets at Israel because of “the continuation of Israel’s annexation for years.” That same year, Jayapal tried to block an arms deal between the US and Israeli governments.

“MP. Jayapal’s statement calling Israel a ‘racist state’ is unacceptable. Israel is America’s biggest ally in the Middle East, and calling it “racist” is not only disgustingly anti-Semitic, but threatens the strength of the relationship between the two countries. Unfortunately, my colleague’s remarks aren’t all that surprising, given that her Congressional years were filled with anti-Israel sentiment and pro-terrorism comments. Anti-Semitism should not be tolerated, which is why I have submitted a resolution to censure Jayapal, and I hope all my fellow MPs will join me in denouncing her hateful and controversial speech,” Ogles said in a statement to the Daily Caller.
The White House, House Democratic leadership and Speaker Kevin McCarthy all condemned Jayapal’s remarks. Spokesperson Carine Jean-Pierre called them unacceptable, and the lawmaker eventually apologized. She did not attend Herzog’s joint speech. claim She said it was due to her schedule. If the resolution passes, Jayapal will be the third lawmaker to be criticized in the past three years. Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gossard was stripped of his seat on the committee in 2021 after he was accused of tweeting a photoshopped animated video showing the decapitation of Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff was charged in June with repeatedly falsely claiming he had information indicating that Donald Trump directly colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
