A man was killed and a police officer was hospitalized in a shooting at the Gila River Indian community early Wednesday morning, according to the Maricopa Police Department.

Two suspects, including the dead man and a teenage boy, were armed and attempted to break into a car on a residential street, police said. Two suspects have been detained, police said. Authorities have not released the identities of the three.

Around 1:30 a.m., police were called by residents who said they had seen three people break into their car near a drive in Seville and Valencia. According to a report to the police, a resident tried to follow the three people, but after the resident threatened to shoot them, the resident stopped following them.

Police said officers arrived at the scene and found the three suspects breaking into a car near West Madrid Avenue, one street north of where they were first seen. As officers approached the suspects, they all ran in separate directions.

A teenage boy also fled west down the same street and was soon apprehended by police. Two other suspects climbed over a wall near the house and continued to flee north into a neighboring field, police said.

Two officers chased the suspects on foot, police said, and one of the suspects opened fire and hit a police officer. Police said the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening but that he was in stable condition at the hospital as of Wednesday morning.

A second officer then fought back and punched one of the suspects. The suspect died on the way to the hospital. Another suspect was arrested “without incident,” police said.

Police said the shooting occurred within the Indian community and the FBI would investigate. No further details have been released and the identities of the three have not been determined.
