At least one person died Monday afternoon after three people fell onto frozen ice at Woods Canyon Lake in Coconino County, officials said.
Witnesses saw the three men walking on ice before falling around 3:30 p.m., said Coconino County Sheriff’s spokesperson John Paxton. Responding units located one person and attempted life-saving measures, but the person was declared dead, Paxton said.
Paxton said the cause of death was likely hypothermia and excess fluid entering his lungs, but officials have yet to confirm the details.
Paxton also said it is still unclear if the remaining two were able to reappear from the water or if they are still alive.
“I have no answers,” said Paxton. “I mean, anything is possible, right? They escaped before we got there, and somehow swam to (somewhere) where no one had ever seen them escape? It’s possible. But there are no eyewitnesses to say they saw them get out of the water.”
Authorities have launched a search for the other two, Paxton said, “and it will probably last all night.”
Woods Canyon Lake is located in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest east of Payson and is a popular area for hikers, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
This is a developing story.
