FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A Ponderosa Fire Department official said on Facebook that the semi-truck they were riding in plummeted 30 feet off the highway and two people were hospitalized.
The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. Friday morning near the Interstate 40 overpass on Naval Observatory Road. The cicada veered out of the westbound lane, hit a 30-foot embankment, and came to a halt on the road below.
Two crew members were hospitalized and one was “severely injured,” the police said. The cicada was carrying a large roll of paper.
The Naval Observation Road will be closed for a long period of time. The Flagstaff Fire Department cooperated in handling the incident.
The cause of the crash is unknown, and it is also unclear whether obstacles or speed were to blame.
