The mother of a 6-year-old boy in Flagstaff who died after being locked in a closet for nearly a month without food in March 2020 was sentenced in Coconino County Superior Court on Thursday. Elizabeth Archibeck, 26, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse on May 24. She was sentenced to life and 10 years in prison for child abuse. Deshawn Martinez was found unresponsive at his home on Block 3100 of North Monte Vista Drive. Police immediately began life-saving operations until medical personnel arrived. Martinez could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene. His parents admitted to police that the boy and his 7-year-old brother were locked in a bedroom closet for about a month and were sometimes deprived of food. His younger brother was also malnourished. Their parents and grandmother admitted that the boys had been punished for sneaking out of the house while their parents were sleeping and stealing food. Elizabeth’s husband, Anthony José Archibec-Martinez, 25, and her mother, Ann Martinez, were also charged with first-degree murder and child abuse and are being tried separately. . However, a trial date has not yet been set.
