US Southwest in store for one-two punch of winter storms

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AP) — A massive storm is expected to hit the southwestern United States over the holiday weekend, bringing heavy snowfall at the highest elevations, rain in the desert, power loss and tree wilt. There will be winds that can topple over, weather forecasters say. .

According to the US National Weather Service, two storms can bring up to 2 feet (61 cm) of snow on Flagstaff and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Much higher volumes were expected in parts of northern Nevada. Heavy snow is also seen in the mountains west of Las Vegas and north-central New Mexico.

The first storm is expected to hit Saturday night through Sunday before a lull before next Monday, Martin Luther King Jr.’s holiday.
