Where to safely play in the snow in Flagstaff

Flagstaff, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — It’s the first alert weather day on the horizon, with snow expected in the highlands Sunday through Monday.

Flagstaff often sees thousands of visitors, especially during snowy and holiday periods. And if you’re planning a trip up north for the three-day weekend, you’ll want to travel safely!

What the Coconino County Sheriff Won’t Want You To Do: Stop on the highway and play on the side of the road. Sheriff Jim Driscoll said he often saw children running on the road or sledding in dangerous areas. Driscoll said Highway 180 could attract thousands of people in the right conditions.

Lawmakers have issued subpoenas, and have issued 46 so far this year. “It’s not safe just to stop anywhere there’s snow. Playing in the snow isn’t illegal,” Driscoll said. “The problem with that is people park along the highway and one car he ends up with 200 cars.”

Driscoll says he doesn’t want to issue citations, but it’s a last-ditch effort to encourage safety. Other things to keep in mind while driving: Keep a chain in your car and have a shovel, extra clothes, water for food, a flashlight and other supplies in case you get stuck.
