Graham County – A 25-year-old inmate at a federal correctional facility – Safford was hospitalized for a drug overdose on Sunday.
The Graham County Sheriff’s Office reported that a lifeline ambulance lieutenant and paramedics were dispatched to the prison around 6:50 p.m. regarding the inmate’s overdose.
FCI-Safford is a low security correctional facility located at 1529 W. Highway 366 (Swift Trail). The facility houses only male offenders and has a total population of 760, according to the Department of Prisons.
The inmate reportedly overdosed on an “unknown drug.” Due to the paramedics’ response to the overdose, they requested a proxy accompany the inmate as he was transported to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center for treatment. The inmate was reportedly breathing while interacting with paramedics, but did not respond.
Afterwards, the prisoner was loaded into an ambulance under the watchful eye of a lieutenant. The deputy then took the ambulance to the hospital and activated the emergency lights and sirens to speed it through the intersection.
Requests to the Prison Service and FCI-Safford regarding the prisoner’s current condition and the cause of the overdose were denied an answer.
“For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the confinement conditions, including the medical conditions, of any particular inmate or group of inmates. We won’t even talk about whether there are any,” said an email from the Prisons Service. “I have no additional information to provide.”
