‘First Day Hike’ attracts large attendance from residents, travelers | Galleries

More than 50 residents and seasonal visitors took part in the opening day hike Monday at Lake Havasu State Park. Park Director Dan Roddy greeted a crowd of locals and visitors before their morning hike. Roddy said Monday's attendance was one of the highest of any New Year's Day event. The guided hike traversed the park's Sunset Trail, which took hikers up and down rocky and sandy paths. Assistant Park Ranger Lauren Haugen gave us a detailed explanation of the surrounding habitat and wildlife seen throughout the area. The hikers finished in the park's cactus garden, where free refreshments awaited the large crowd.
