TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Today’s state speech in Tucson was unlike any business-driven speech we’ve heard in the last 15 years or so. Today’s ones were more socially driven.
Governor Katie Hobbs gave the state’s first encore in Tucson. This has become a tradition.
Here she spoke about her commitment to public education. Lift spending caps that she says will undermine public education if they aren’t lifted, and make sure teachers stay in their jobs rather than quit them. Arizona has the lowest teacher retention rate in the country, she said.
And she talked about prioritizing spending less on charter schools and private schools and more on public education.
“Earlier legislators passed a massive expansion of school vouchers that lacked accountability and could very well bankrupt the state,” she told the crowd. Offering would cost Arizona taxpayers $1.5 billion over the next 10 years.”
Governor Hobbes fits right in with the political climate here in Southern Arizona. She is friends with Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and now with Adelita Grijalva, the newly appointed chair of the Pima County Board of Supervisors.
“I’m really looking forward to some of the upcoming policy changes to ensure we’re accountable for our environment, public education, and what’s important and good for Arizona,” Grijalva said. rice field.
The governor stressed the need to reach the border and invited the likes of Homeland Security’s Alejandro Majorquis to tour the border with her and find solutions to the crisis there.
She’s spent millions of dollars addressing the state’s water crisis, which she calls a pivotal moment, showing that the west side of Phoenix won’t have a guaranteed water supply for 100 years. We publish a report.
“My administration issued an executive order establishing the Governor’s Water Policy Council to modernize and expand the Arizona Groundwater Management Act,” she said.
She also confirmed her pro-choice stance, which received the biggest applause, by saying she didn’t want her daughter to grow up with less rights than she has.
She received 27 applause during her speech and a standing ovation when entering and ending her speech.
