Montgomery’s Whitewater Park to host Olympic trials

The American Canoeing Association announced that the canoe slalom and kayak cross Olympic trials will be held at the new Whitewater Park in Montgomery for American athletes aiming to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Trial dates are set for April 13th and 14th, with the exact schedule to be announced at a later date.

Billed as a “state-of-the-art circular whitewater park and outdoor adventure center,” the park is located off Interstate 65 in Montgomery.

according to Official websitethe park boasts an Olympic-standard recirculating whitewater flume that utilizes the world's most advanced whitewater technology for paddle sports athletes and competitions.

Kayak Cross, a new Olympic event, sees four kayakers race head-to-head through a section of rapids around a gate. Canoe slalom has been described as similar to skiing, where athletes guide a boat around a gate, but instead of going head-to-head, they are timed.

Governor Kay Ivey praised Alabama's magnetism for such an impressive event.

“Successes like this remind us of our ability to achieve world-class excellence, become new trailblazers, and foster a ripple impact throughout the state's economy and tourism sector. Athletes from all over the world and fans, we are proud to welcome you to our great state this spring.”

It should be very exciting to see both events take place, and the nation's capital, Montgomery, will have the opportunity to host future U.S. Olympians.
