Gilberry, former football star withdraws congressional bid – ‘I am never going to quit on Alabama’


Former University of Alabama defensive end and NFL player Wallace Gilberry has announced that he is withdrawing from the Republican nomination for Alabama's newly elected 2nd Congressional District.

Gilberry announced his candidacy in November.

“I am not a politician, but I have always had a heart for supporting the state of Alabama and helping our people become better. The response we have received over the last month on this campaign has been humbling. , I am amazed by it. After reflecting on Christmas and New Year's, I have come to the decision that this race is not suitable to help the community at this time, so I have decided to withdraw,” Gilberry posted on social media. said in a statement. media.

“But I will never quit in Alabama. I will get involved in every way I can to fight against too many bad policies. I love you all and look forward to seeing you all around Alabama soon. God bless you. I wish you all the best.”

Gilberry, a native of Bay Minette, Alabama, was a standout athlete during his time at the University of Alabama. He finished his collegiate career with 160 tackles (46 of them for loss), 15 sacks, and three forced fumbles.

Gilberry's senior season was Nick Saban's first season at Alabama in 2007. He then moved on to the NFL, where he spent nine seasons with various teams including the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Republican primary candidates for the 2nd Congressional District include state Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Atmore), former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker (R-Pike Road), and Montgomery State's Attorney Caroleen Dobson. There are still candidates left.
