More families from Mexican side of San Luis Port of Entry seeking asylum

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (3TV/CBS 5) — On the Mexican side, San Luis Port of Entrydozens of families pitched tents outside, waiting to apply for asylum in the United States.

The encampment has expanded in recent months. The majority of immigrants come from other parts of Mexico, but more local families have recently come from Mexico. san luis rio colorado They too have begun seeking asylum in the port of San Luis.

Angeles Medina, one of the shelter's directors, said some of these families live in the SLRC's rural areas. She said some of those families say they are fleeing cartel violence.

Guadalupe Tapia is an immigrant from Guerrero, Mexico. She said she has been camping out at the port of entry for three weeks. She has met some local residents who are seeking asylum for her, she said. “There was a woman here. She said some people burned down her house. She has no place to live now,” Tapia said.

Yuma County Economic and Intergovernmental Director Alejandro Figueroa They said they were concerned about the health of the migrants. “There is a perception that there has been an increase in violence in recent months, especially at the end of last year. Perhaps that is what is causing many local residents to apply for asylum in the United States,” Figueroa said.

They hope to reach an agreement with Mexican officials at the SLRC to deal with the growing encampment. Figueroa said he tried to get help from the federal government but was unsuccessful. He said it is now up to local officials to prevent a crisis from occurring at border ports that could impact Yuma County. “We hope that the Mexican Port Director and the Mayor of San Luis Rio Colorado will discuss this issue and consider other options so that the migrants do not have to stay there through the cold winter nights,” Figueroa said.
