Storm dumps nearly 20 inches of snow on northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AP) — A winter storm threw up to nearly 20 inches of snow in northern Arizona on Sunday, with 12 to 18 inches in the Flagstaff area, according to the National Weather Service.

With more snow expected Monday, Northern Arizona University announced Tuesday that it will cancel all classes at its Flagstaff Mountain campus due to the storm.

However, school officials said classes held at other NAU locations, including online, will be held at their regular times and locations.

State Route 64 in the Grand Canyon area and State Route 89 northbound near Sedona through the village of Kachina were closed multiple times on Sunday, according to an Arizona Department of Transportation official.

“We have 200 snowplows statewide, clearing our roads around the clock,” said ADOT spokesman David Woodfill. “Before these storms, we always go out in advance and prepare the roads with deicers.”

Heavy snow was also expected over the holiday weekend around the Southwest, the mountains west of Las Vegas, northern New Mexico, and other mountains.

The National Weather Service predicted up to 11 inches of snow in Chama, but much less is expected in much of northern New Mexico.

Santa Fe and Taos can expect two inches of snow by Sunday night, with more snow likely Monday and Tuesday.

The Phoenix metropolitan area received about 0.03 inches of rain by noon Sunday, bringing total rainfall for the month 0.57 inches above average.
