The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced Thursday that it will produce a report card detailing its response to anti-Semitism across campus.
A report card is issued every spring. according to ADL press release. The purpose of these reports is to show students, parents, alumni, university staff, and others how individual universities are addressing anti-Semitism in comparison to each other.
“This new tool is part of a series of steps the ADL is taking to not only sound the alarm on the widespread increase in anti-Semitic incidents, but also to ensure the safety of Jewish students on campus. “This is done to carry out various activities of the ADL,” the ADL said.
ADL says the tool uses a variety of tests to assess school climate. The data includes student surveys, reports of on-campus incidents, and input from campus experts and partners, ADL said. (Related: Anti-Semitism is on the rise at universities. Here's why).
The ADL plans to send letters to numerous campuses with large Jewish populations in January. The letter informs them of the assessment and requests information about any actions taken to provide safety for Jewish students and combat anti-Semitic activity on campus, according to a press release. That's what it means.
Initial data from these report cards will be made public to help 2024 college freshmen and their parents make college-admission decisions, ADL said.

“The report card will enable students, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders to understand whether and how the campus is meeting this promise,” the ADL said. . letter Civil rights groups were sent to campus presidents in December 2023 to demand zero tolerance for anti-Semitism. In the letter, the group pointed to what it called an “unprecedented rise in anti-Semitism in the United States” following Hamas's Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
“Universities must commit to not tolerate anti-Semitism and must take clear and decisive action to achieve that. “Not only does it help us rank schools in a comparative format, but it also provides an opportunity for campuses to demonstrate that they are doing the right thing,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.
