The Alabama Department of Transportation is monitoring the potential for severe winter weather to create dangerous conditions across the Yellowhammer state this week, as temperatures approach zero degrees in northern Alabama and reach 20 degrees along the Gulf Coast.
ALDOT said in areas where conditions are expected to be the most severe, personnel are monitoring forecasts and road conditions with equipment prepared to pre-treat roads this weekend if conditions permit. Crews are ready to treat roads after winter precipitation.

Pretreatment effectiveness may be reduced in areas where rain precedes or mixes with winter precipitation, ALDOT said.
ALDOT said its goal is to keep state highways, U.S. highways and interstates safe and open. The agency's crews prioritize interstate routes, then other routes, depending on traffic. ALDOT maintains state highways, U.S. highways, and interstates. Check with your local government for road conditions in your city or county.
Motorists are advised to avoid traveling if snowy or icy conditions occur. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in many parts of Alabama for several days, potentially causing moisture on roads to freeze.
