Authorities Release Video Of Rescued Utah Sisters Hidden In Barrels By Cult Leader: REPORT

Authorities have released footage of two girls being rescued from a remote compound in Utah linked to a doomsday cult, the Daily Mail reported on Monday.

Police found two girls, Dinah and Hattie Colsharp, ages 8 and 4, respectively, in Salt Lake City. according to Daily Mail. The girls reportedly went missing and were found in a secluded area in December 2017 following an intensive Amber Alert search.

The girls' father, John Coulthard, kidnapped the girls and handed them over to cult associate Samuel Schaefer, who then hid them on the property, the newspaper reported. Shafer is considered a “prophet” of the cult and reportedly intended to marry the Coltharp sisters, according to law enforcement.

According to the Daily Mail, Shafer's own daughters, Lily and Samantha, ages 7 and 5, were also found during the police raid. They were reportedly not reported missing. The youngest children, Samantha and Hattie, spent more than a day in a 50-gallon barrel of blue water in sub-zero temperatures in a desperate attempt by the alleged perpetrators to hide from law enforcement. He survived, the newspaper reported. Meanwhile, the older girls were reportedly found inside an abandoned trailer. All four people suffered from dehydration, the newspaper said.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Shafer admitted during interrogation that he hid the girls to avoid police detection. A police investigation reportedly uncovered a makeshift facility made up of shipping containers in the Utah desert. Earlier in the day, Hattie and Dinah's brothers, William and Seth, were also found and taken away by their father, the newspaper said. Their mother, Micah Coulthard, reportedly activated an Amber Alert after reporting her children missing. (Related: Report: Suspected sex cult leader released from trial after apparent seizure)

Authorities claimed the men's religious fanaticism centered on apocalyptic beliefs and the prospect of gaining followers, the Daily Mail reported. Schaefer's cult, known as the “Knights of the Crystal Blade,” spread his disturbing teachings, the paper said. Schafer reportedly detailed on his website his own “revelations” about marriage and cheating, including controversial practices such as polygamy and child marriage.

In May 2018, Shafer pleaded guilty to child rape and abuse and was sentenced to at least 26 years in prison, the newspaper reported. Coulthard reportedly filed a similar case in August 2018 and was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison for sodomy with a child and bigamy. The newspaper said both men harbored grand delusions of overthrowing the government and supported ideas long abandoned by mainstream Mormonism.
