New Hanover County Commissioner Dane Scalise I have written Wednesday's editorial condemned new Hanover Superintendent Dr. Charles Faust's announcement that Mosley's Career Preparation Academy (known as “Mosley”) would be closed and converted to a “freshman school.”
“Although newcomer schools may be called schools, they are more like immigrant resettlement and assimilation facilities,” Scalise wrote. “The stated mission of these facilities is not to educate students in the traditional sense, but to assist entire immigrant and refugee families in integrating into the communities in which they move. ”
Mosley “provides a tailored education to local students with special learning needs,” Scalise said.

Scalise wrote that she was “gravely concerned” that Faust and his staff had “unilaterally decided” to close schools to admit illegal immigrants without the approval of the school board. Ta. (Related article: 'The president needs to do more': Democratic government slams illegal immigration in state)
“Debates and decisions of this magnitude should be made and made by our elected school boards, not by staff behind closed doors,” Scalise wrote.
Scalise explained that special needs schools “meet a critical need that is not currently being served elsewhere in the school system,” but that it is “not too late” to save Mosley. If Faust's plan comes to fruition, students will have no choice but to be transferred elsewhere. Until it bears fruit.
“My view on all of this is simple,” Scalise wrote. “New Hanover County Schools should give first and foremost priority to students who live in New Hanover County and attend our schools. The undeniable truth is that freshman schools are outside the scope of our educational system and will soon be replaced by students from outside the county. This means it will attract a large number of immigrant families.”
Faust did not respond to requests for comment from the Daily Caller.
