The trailer for “Monkey Man” was released on Friday, and it appears Dev Patel will be putting his knife fighting skills to the test.
Most people will know Patel from hit movies like “Slumdog Millionaire'' and “Lion.''monkey man” seems far from his Oscar-worthy role. Not only will Patel star in the film, but the action-thriller will be his directorial debut. Apparently, the story revolves around “one man's journey of revenge against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systematically victimize the poor and powerless.” The trailer explains.
Patel plays Kid, an anonymous hero who spends his days earning money at an underground fight club. “After years of suppressed anger, the Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the city's evil elite enclave. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hand becomes “We launch an explosive campaign of retribution to take down the men who took everything from us,” the trailer's description continues.
Patel wrote the original story and co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Colley, and stars a number of international stars. (Related: Apple's latest mega TV show 'Shantaram' will completely divide viewers)
The story of a poor boy dealing with severe trauma may be nothing new, but the way the trailer was shot makes this movie not only a cult classic, but also a way never before reserved. There are indications that it may reach an international audience. An action thriller co-produced by the United Kingdom and the United States.
And Patel actually stopped a knife fight in Adelaide, Australia in 2022, so perhaps this movie is his way to show off his true skills as a martial artist? It also looks like Patel may have brought quite a bit of the dry British wit that everyone remembers from “Skins.” And by 'we' we literally mean all of the UK Millennials and no one else.
“Monkey Man” will be released on April 5th.
