Federal campaign finance reports dropped Wednesday, documents show Anthony Daniels has a large fundraising lead among the 12 Democratic primary candidates for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District.
Mr. Daniels raised more than $217,000 this cycle, but none of that money came from personal loans from candidates to his campaign. Shomali Figures came in second with $203,000, $25,000 of which came in the form of a loan Figures made to his campaign.
The only other candidates to raise more than six figures were state Sen. Merica Coleman and state Rep. Jeremy Gray. Coleman loaned her campaign $50,000, which ended up reaching $112,000, while Gray finished the cycle with just over $104,000.
State Rep. Napoleon Bracey, who did well in the polls, raised a total of just under $65,000, of which $20,000 came in the form of loans.
On the Republican side, former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker has a large lead, at least on paper, raising more than $340,000 during the period. But $300,000 of that money came in the form of a loan Mr. Brubaker gave to his campaign.
Attorney Caroleen Dobson, in a similar case, received about $60,000 in donations from individuals and PACs, but a $250,000 loan to her campaign increased her total donations to more than $300,000.
But state Sen. Greg Albritton raised the most money as an individual, with nearly $65,000 in personal contributions and a final $126,000 after loaning his campaign $50,000. Finished strong.
It's also worth noting that the three Democrats who raised the most money this cycle, Daniels, Figures and Gray, defeated Republicans in districts that should have been roughly evenly divided. . The constituencies publicly announced by the ALGOP leadership are in the drama.
