Alabama strengthens grip on SEC with halftime comeback against Georgia

The Alabama Crimson Tide had a big win on the road against the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday night, solidifying their lead in the SEC with a 7-1 record.

It was one of the worst first halves of the year, especially offensively, as the Tide scored just 27 points and trailed by 14 points. Perhaps what was even more worrying about the first half for Alabama was the fact that Georgia continued to destroy Alabama in the first half. They held a whopping 27-7 rebounding advantage and got to the glass.

Alabama started the game down 17-2 and missed its first nine three-point attempts.

But that was the story of the first two halves, as the Tide defeated Georgia 58-35 in the second half and won the rebound battle 19-12. Mark Sears Alabama's leading scorer, Mark Sears, scored just four points in the first half, but scored 19 points in the second half.

But the biggest performance for the Tide came from Grant Nelson. Nelson had 20 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Furthermore, in the final stages of the game, he made two clutch threes in a row and contributed to a come-from-behind victory.

After the game, head coach Nate Oats praised Alabama's effort and resilience in winning a tough road game and staying atop the conference.

“If you don't win some of these, you're not going to win a league title. There's going to be some games where you don't play your best basketball, even for 20 minutes. But still, to steal a win like that, it takes a lot of effort. We have to win some road games. We can't afford to lose games like this,” Oats said.

“Two years ago, when we didn't win in the league, we lost this game. Everyone who played in the second half showed toughness and fight, we showed character and grit, and tonight we improved a lot.”

Alabama has now won nine of its past 10 games.

Tennessee and Kentucky also lost midweek games, so Alabama is in a good position to compete to defend the SEC title. The Tide (7-1) holds a full-game lead over the University of South Carolina and Auburn (both 6-2), winning tiebreakers against each. Tennessee is in 4th place with 5 wins and 2 losses, while Kentucky is tied for 5th place with Ole Miss and Florida State with 5 wins and 3 losses.

Alabama basketball next plays at home against Mississippi State on Saturday night at 7:30pm CST.
