FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (AP) — A widespread winter storm in northern Arizona that brought record snowfall to Flagstaff over the weekend is expected to last through Tuesday night, bringing snow and rain to the southwestern mountains. It continues to rain, prompting school closures.

According to the National Weather Service, Flagstaff’s most “heavy snow period” is expected from Monday afternoon through early evening, after which the showers began to taper on Tuesday afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning above 5500 feet for northern Arizona is in effect until 11:00 PM Tuesday.

Flagstaff saw 15 inches of snow on Sunday. At least 17 inches of snow fell in northern Arizona over the weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Amid the storm, the Flagstaff Unified School District announced it would be closed on Tuesday. Coconino Community College and Northern Arizona University also canceled classes at his campus in Flagstaff on Tuesday.

By Monday morning, up to 9 inches of snow had accumulated over 7,800 feet (about 2.4 kilometers) in the mountains northwest of Las Vegas. At the same time, the storm brought heavy rain to the Las Vegas canyon before moving west toward Arizona and New Mexico, said meteorologist Morgan Stethman.
