For the first and only time this season, the Lake Havasu High School wrestling team hosted a dual match on Wednesday.
In six boys doubles matches, Havasu won 5-1 over River Valley, 60-12. She was 66-12 against Lee Williams. Bryce defeated Palo Verde 45-30. 54-18 against Parker. and 66-6 against Kingman. The only loss was to Mojave, 57-14.
“It was as expected so there were no surprises. Mojave was very strong and exploited our weaknesses,” head coach Ryan Schuman said. “Those kids were prepared, but we went out and wrestled as hard as we could. I'm proud of them.”
These duals also served as Senior Night for the eight seniors as the regular season ended.
“The seniors have been here with me for three or four years, and most of them have been very committed,” Schumann said. “It's always hard to get emotional and wrestle knowing this is your last game at home. But now they have to train in state for sectionals. That's the goal. . All the other games are just warm-ups.”
Palo Verde Wrestling feels more connected because everyone is on the river, and it gives all river schools a chance to compete against California schools.
“They want to connect more. We want to go there and wrestle, because there's a California team as well, but this is just a good chapter,” Schumann said. “It's okay because it's along the river.”
On the women's side, Marilyn Flowers, Megan Colmenares and Jaycee Fox won their respective matches.
The girls' section will be held this weekend at Agua Fria High School, while the boys' section will be held on February 10th at Buckeye High School.
“We're not going to rush smart, we're going to correct our mistakes. We're not going to change the game plan. They just have to pull the trigger and be willing to move on.” ” Schumann said. “So they have to approach it with a commitment that this is what we're going to do and I'm going to do it because they're all capable.” We can take it to the state legislature.”
