Arizona has a large number of independent voters, so independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came to Tucson on Monday night to appeal to Arizona voters to get on the ballot.
“Bobby Kennedy and his centrist approach really appeals to all voters,” said Wyatt Ford, an independent voter.
In Tucson, unaffiliated voters make up more than 93,000 voters, about 33 percent, or about one-third, of the electorate, according to the Pima County Recorder's Office.
Kennedy said he is focusing on independent voters in battleground states like Arizona.
“Arizona is one of the swing states. It's a state that was basically split even in the last election,” Kennedy said.
Speaking to a packed rally at the Fox Theater in downtown Tucson, Kennedy spoke about issues that Republicans and Democrats typically don't touch, such as the potential harm drug companies are having on people's health.
“I've represented people, just ordinary Americans, in lawsuits against big corporations that have poisoned them and disrupted their lives,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy also spoke about important battlefield issues such as borders. He said President Biden has taken a flexible stance on the issue and that he expects him to take a stronger stance if elected president. On Tuesday, he will hold a border roundtable in Cochise County and visit the border itself.
He also spoke about the economy at the rally, saying he wanted to cut spending in the United States.
“We're going to do that by cutting our military budget in half and ending the chronic disease epidemic, which is our biggest budget burden,” he said.
Asked what part of the military budget he would cut, he said overseas employment.
“We need to bring our troops home and we need to arm them overseas,” he said.
