The Brookwood Sports Complex, created in 1981, is set to undergo several upgrades thanks to a recent federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to the City of Brookwood.

Renovations include connecting nearby sidewalks to the playground's sidewalks, paving the two parking lots, adding more lighting to both parking lots, and resurfacing the existing walking path.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced the $434,300 grant on Friday.

“These improvements will make Brookwood Sports Complex more attractive and accessible, encouraging people to exercise and enjoy the outdoors,” Ivey said. “We are pleased that this grant will be used to improve the lives of Brookwood residents by providing a great place for families to gather.”

Kenneth Boswell, director of ADECA, the department that manages the funds, emphasized the need for a fully developed area dedicated to recreation.

“Physical activity is critical to individual health, and enriched recreational areas also benefit the well-being of the community,” Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Governor Ivey in supporting this effort. We commend city leaders who are dedicated to completing this project and the many residents who have expressed their support for this project.” .”

The total cost of the project is estimated at $868,600. The City of Brookwood announced it will provide matching funds for the project.

Created by Congress in 1964, the LWCF program helps states develop and preserve outdoor recreation facilities.
