The pursuit, which began in the city of Huachuca and ended in Whetstone, reached speeds of more than 130 miles per hour and involved a foot chase through the desert.
WHITSTONE, Ariz. — A man has been arrested after a police chase that reached speeds of 130 miles per hour and resulted in a foot chase through desert terrain, police said. Cochise County Sheriff's Office.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident occurred around noon on February 1, when an alert was issued about a stolen vehicle at milepost 310 on Arizona State Route 90 near Whitstone, about 14 miles north of Sierra Vista. This was the beginning.
A Huachuca Police Department officer was approximately four miles south of where the vehicle was reported stolen and saw the vehicle heading south toward Sierra Vista.
Officers then pursued the vehicle and after confirming that it was indeed the vehicle listed in the report, attempted to stop the vehicle near Buffalo Soldier Trail and Frye Boulevard in Huachuca. And so.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Milton Javier Ahumada Torres, signaled as if to pull over, but then made a U-turn and began heading back toward Frye Boulevard, turning toward the front gate. Pass Fort Huachuca and then make a U-turn back to Highway 90.
That's when the chase began.
Officers from the City of Huachuca and the Sierra Vista Police Department repeatedly pursued Ahumada Torres as he sped northbound on Highway 90, repeatedly weaving into oncoming traffic and reaching speeds of up to 130 miles per hour. I've reached the point.
Due to the speed of the pursuit, Sierra Vista police retreated. Huachuca Police Department then worked with the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety to end the pursuit.
When Ahumada-Torres arrived at RV City and Oak Street in Wheelstone, her car's tires were damaged by a tire deflation device installed by police.
Ahumada Torres still tried to escape, but quickly spun into the median.
When the car stopped, Ahumada-Torres got out of the car and tried to flee through the desert. Ahumada-Torres was soon found after a foot pursuit, a search using K-9 units, a drone, and a Customs and Border Protection helicopter.
Ahumada Torres, an undocumented immigrant, is being held in the Cochise County Jail on multiple charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, endangerment and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff's office.
Police also learned that Ahumada-Torres had previously been arrested for illegally entering the United States and was on supervised release.
The Huachuca Police Department and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident.
