YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Parks and Recreation team provided an update on the Yuma Parks Master Plan during Tuesday's City Council work session.
The goal is to create a framework for the development, planning, and maintenance of Yuma's parks, arts, trails, facilities, and programs.
Improvements and changes will be made over the next 10 years.
They're already surveying the public about what they want.
“The 10-year plan will start with getting residents' input on what they wanted to see in the park, and the next phase will prioritize recreation and from there we can get a sense that it's okay.” is what we need to pay the most attention to,” said Dave Nash, City of Yuma Public Affairs Coordinator.
The first part of the plan involves conducting a survey in which more than 1,500 people participate to share what they would like to see.
“The good news we've found is that the community really values parks and recreation,” said Parks and Recreation Director Eric Erfer. “Ninety-eight percent of those surveyed all said it was a valuable asset they wanted to keep in the city of Yuma and very valuable to know about…Second, more parks than most communities The consultants told us that they had investigated that utilization rates were very high. ”
Local surveys show people want more music festivals, farmers markets and theater productions on their wish lists.
But what people most want is to take care of what is already there.
“The most important thing for residents at this time is that we just take care of what they're asking for reinvestment in parks. This is great news. They want new playgrounds. They want new playgrounds. They want to build a playground. They want something that's old,' with new amenities naturally throughout the park,” Urfer said.
A second survey is expected to be conducted next month.
