Maricopa County’s heat death tally grows to 569

Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) — New numbers mark a grim end to the summer season after Maricopa County set an all-time record for heat-related deaths in the Valley.

This week, a new report from the county Department of Public Health shows a total of 569 confirmed heat-related deaths as of Sunday, Oct. 28. This number is a 50% increase compared to the same period last year. An additional 60 deaths are under investigation. The latest data also reveals that many of these deaths occurred during the month-long heat wave in July, with a sharp rise in the week from July 16 to July 22. . Temperatures during this period peaked at nearly 120 degrees.

The Arizona family previously reported that the average high for metro Phoenix in July was 114.7.°F, the average minimum value was 90.8°F of the month. Many heat records were broken, including the most consecutive days with morning lows in the 90s and 16 consecutive days with morning lows in the 90s at Sky Harbor. Still, when it comes to demographics, the numbers paint a similar picture. Approximately 60% of heat-related deaths involve people over 50 years of age, and men are particularly affected.
